10-man Sunderland hold on for West Ham draw

Premier League, Stadium of Light -Sunderland 2 (Fletcher 10 Lens 20, Lens s/o 57) West Ham 2 (Jenkinson 45+1 Payet 60)

Dimitri Payet gave West Ham a 2-2 draw against Sunderland after Jeremain Lens scored and was sent off for the home side.
Sunderland took an early lead after Steven Fletcher fired in a shot from close range after Yann M’Vila pulled back a free kick from the left wing. Lens doubled the lead when M’Vila seized on a defensive mistake to play in the forward, who dinked a great shot over Adrian in goal.

Sunderland had more chances to score, with Fabio Borinimissing three good chances across the half, and were given cause to worry when Carl Jenkinson pulled one back after converting a Victor Moses cross.
In the second half, Sunderland again failed to help themselves when Lens, already booked, recklessly slid into Winston Reid to earn a second yellow. Minutes later Dimitri Payet seized on a terrible Costel Pantilimon save fromManuel Lanzini to equalise.
West Ham should have been down to 10 when Mark Nobleintroduced his forearm into Borini in midfield, but escaped without even a yellow, let alone a straight red. Neither side had the ability to find a winner.

TALKING POINT

Dick Advocaat might want to leave, but indiscipline is something that should be coached out of a side. At 2-0 up Sunderland were on course for victory, but his team could not keep their focus and go into the first half with their two-goal lead intact. Before the hour mark, Jeremain Lens got himself sent off with a ridiculous tackle, just one of a number of rough tackles from the homeside. Sebastian Coates, with another yellow, is suspended too. Three minutes after the red card, the scores were level, and Sunderland had thrown away another match. Advocaat might want to leave Sunderland, frustrated with the whole club, but he might make his job easier if he could teach his players to think.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Dimitri Payet (West Ham United): He deserves the recognition for the most important goal of the game, and taking advantage of the situation, but really he was nothing special. Jeremain Lens contributed the most aesthetically pleasing goal of the match, but his reckless approach to tackling might well have been the worst moment of Sunderland’s performance too.
